How to Extend the Battery Life of Your Cell Phone

May 12, 2015

Is there anything more frustrating than pulling out your phone to make a call, send a quick text message, or simply check your emails, only to find the battery is drained and down to its last few percent? Even the most advanced smart phones still struggle with maintaining their battery life, and the problem only seems to worsen as the phone ages (some say it’s a conspiracy by the device manufacturers to ensure you buy a new phone every 2 years). But let’s put the conspiracy theories aside for now. The real question is – what can you do to improve the battery life of your cell phone?

Here are some of the most effective tips and tricks for extending and conserving the battery life of your smartphone.

1. Turn down the brightness—It’s amazing how much battery life is drained lighting your device’s screen. Turn down the brightness a little bit to keep your phone’s battery juiced up.

2. Turn off unnecessary notifications and fetch options—So many apps these days are constantly running in the background, fetching new data and sending new notifications to your phone all the time. This takes battery power to achieve. You can turn off notifications on most apps to help preserve battery life.

3. Use power saving mode if available—Some smart phones have a special power saving mode you can toggle on to preserve battery life. Turning the power saving mode on will restrict your phone to its most basic functions: making calls, sending text messages, and limited web browsing. This can be very helpful in situations where you’re trying to make those last few remaining percent of battery life last.

4. Be careful in low signal areas—You can’t expect to always be in an area that has full strength cell phone signal. That’s impossible. You’ll inevitably be in areas, from time to time, where you have only 1 or 2 bars in your signal. The problem is that when you have a bad signal, your phone has to struggle to grab the signal and work properly. This can drain the battery. Be aware of this, and if you don’t need your phone when in one of these areas, consider turning the device to airplane mode.

5. Take a break from your phone—Depending on which study you read, people spend anywhere from about 2 to 4 hours glued to their phones every day. That’s several weeks a year people spend staring at their phones. It’s now believed that smartphone addiction is actually a real problem. The point of this is to say that maybe the reason your battery is draining so quickly is because you spend your entire day on the phone. So, maybe, we should all take a break from our devices from time to time.

By following these simple tips, you should be able to get more life out of your battery and more enjoyment out of your smartphone!
