Extreme Temperatures and Your iPhone: What You Should Know

As advanced as today’s iPhones are, it’s important to remember that these smart phones are made up of tiny, fragile electronic components. It’s absolutely essential that you know how to properly care for your iPhone to keep it working properly. One of the most important things you can do to keep your iPhone from wearing down or getting damaged is to protect from extreme temperatures. Both very cold and very hot ambient temperature can affect battery health and device function.

Apple recommends using your iPhone in conditions where the temperature is between 32⁰ F to 95⁰ F. Temperatures outside of this range can “cause the device to change its behavior” in an attempt to keep from becoming too cold or too hot. This can cause a drain on the iPhone’s battery life, force the phone to shut off, or even prevent you from using certain functions on the phone.

If your iPhone is in the extreme cold, you can expect the battery life to suffer noticeably. Once the device is brought back up to a higher temperature within the device’s operating range, battery life should return to normal.

When your iPhone is in the extreme heat (like the kind we get here in Houston), the device will perform and behave differently. A hot iPhone could suffer battery damage. The device may not charge, the display might go black, or certain features, such as navigation, may be unavailable until the device cools down.

Protecting Your iPhone from Extreme Temperatures

Extreme temperatures can have a negative effect on your iPhone. Thankfully, there are some simple steps you can take to protect your device from temperature damage:

  • Don’t leave your iPhone in the car

  • Avoid leaving your iPhone in direct sunlight for an extended amount of time

  • When your device gets too hot or too cold, turn it off and move it to a more suitable environment

By following these simple tips, you can protect your iPhone and extend its lifetime.
